Marie Marevna

B. 1892 Cheboksary, Russia D. 1984 London, England

Marie Vorobieff-Stebelska, also known as Marevna, was a Russian-born cubist painter. She is internationally known for convincingly combining elements of cubism with pointillism. She tends to be accredited with having been the first female cubist painter.

Marevna was born in 1892 in Cheboksary and spent her childhood in Tiflis (Tbilisi). In 1910 she went to Moscow to study at the Stroganov art academy, but already in the following year left for Italy. On the island of Capri she was introduced to Maxim Gorky who called her “Marevna” after a Russian fairy sea princess that became her signature.

In 1912, as a twenty-year-old budding talent, Marevna moved to Paris, where she continued her art studies and soon began displaying her work at exhibitions.

She became acquainted and, became, friends with some of the greatest artists and writers of the early twentieth century living in Montparnasse and especially at La Ruche, among them were Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Jean Cocteau, Ilya Ehrenburg, Maxim Gorky, Max Jacob, Moise Kisling, Pinchus Krémègne, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Chaim Soutine and Diego Rivera.

In 1949 Marevna moved to England. She died in London on May 4, 1984.

Marevna’s paintings were exhibited at several museums and art galleries worldwide including Guggenheim, New York; Petit Palace Museum, Geneva; Tate, Liverpool; but not until 20 years after her death did her work have its first solo exhibition (Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, 2004).
