| Was born in the Soviet Union in 1933 . In 1957 he graduated from V.A. Surikov Art Academy. He worked as an illustrator of children’s books, while at the same time producing unofficial Conceptual art. With Vitali Komar, Alexander Melamid, Erik Bulatov, and Dmitri Prigov, he formed the group of Moscow conceptualists. These artists tried to break through the façade of the official Soviet culture. Since moving to the West in 1980, he has focused on large-scale installations. |

Kabakov’s first big installation in the West was The Characters, exhibited in 1988 in de Ronald Feldman Gallery, New York. His work was featured among others in the 1992 Venice Biennial and the 1997 Whitney Biennial. Ilya Kabakov was named as one of the ten greatest living artists by ArtNews in 2000. He now lives and works on Long Island (New York). His works are in Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens; and many other prestigious private and public collections worldwide. |
